Yves Van Couter
Yves is a member of the Loyens & Loeff Litigation & Risk Management Practice Group. He is also in charge of the Automotive, the Food & Beverages and the Technologies Teams in Belgium.
He has expertise in (international) commercial law, and intellectual property law (including technology transfers and trade mark licensing), distribution law (including franchising law) and market practices (including advertising, labelling and packaging). He both advises his clients in these fields and represents them in court in litigation relating to these topics.
Yves is an arbitrator with the World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva and with the CEPANI (Belgian Center for Arbitration and Mediation) in Belgium.
He teaches IP law as Honorary International Chair Professor at the National Taipei University of Technology and as Guest Professor at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Cali (Colombia). He has authored several publications on commercial contracts and intellectual property law.
Yves is mentioned as a leading expert by Chambers & Partners Europe (2017) and Legal 500 EMEA in IP, IT and Food law. He is also recognised as an expert in intellectual property by the Best Lawyers guide (2017).
Yves has been registered at the Brussels Bar (Nederlandse Orde van Advocaten) since 1991.
Yves holds an LL.M. in Intellectual Property Law from a joint program between the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the KU Leuven (Belgium, 2000), an LL.M. in Common Law Studies from the Georgetown University (Washington D.C., U.S.A., 1994 / Fulbright Scholar), an LL.M. in International and European Law from the Université catholique de Louvain (Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, 1991), and a Law degree from Universiteit Gent (Belgium, 1990).
